seen a great light.

PEOPLE:         THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARKNESS                             AND THE DARKNESS HAS NOT OVERCOME IT

PASTOR:         Those who dwelt in the land of deep darkness, on

them the light shined.

PEOPLE:         WE HAVE BEHELD CHRIST’S GLORY, GLORY

AS OF THE ONLY SON FROM THE FATHER.

PASTOR:         To us a child is born,

                        To us a Son is given.

PEOPLE:         IN HIM WAS LIFE, AND THE LIFE WAS THE

him whose birth the angels sing;

come, adore on bended knee

Christ the Lord, the newborn king.  Refrain

THE OPENING PRAYER

Pastor:  Almighty God, you made this Holy Night shine with the brightness of the true light.  Grant that here on earth we may walk in the Light of Jesus’ presence, and in the last day wake to the Brightness of His Glory; through your only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, the Babe of Bethlehem, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

PEOPLE:  AMEN.  (All sit following the prayer.)

THE HYMN “I Love To Tell The Story”  (Verse 1 only)

I Love to Tell the Story

1 I love to tell the story

of unseen things above,

of Jesus and his glory,

of Jesus and his love.

I love to tell the story,

because I know it's true;

it satisfies my longings

as nothing else would do.

Refrain

I love to tell the story;

I'll sing this theme in glory

and tell the old, old story

of Jesus and his love.

THE SCRIPTURE LESSON – LUKE 2:1-20

THE CAROL  - “Away In A Manager”

Away in a Manger

1 Away in a manger, no crib for his bed,

the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head;

the stars in the sky looked down where he lay;

the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

2 The cattle are lowing; the poor baby wakes,

but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.

I love you, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky

and stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

3 Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay

close by me forever and love me, I pray.

Bless all the dear children in your tender care

and fit us for heaven, to live with you there.

(As verse 4, written by Pastor, is sung, children come forward and sit on the steps near the manger, and await the arrival of the story-teller.  Kids – remember to leave a pathway for the story-teller.)

4 O come new Lord Je-sus

and teach us a – gain.

Speak through a new stor-y

the truth now as then.

A clown is no clown

When he shows us your love

O bless us O Je-sus

Send light from a-bove!                 -R. M. Lescallette, 2005

THE CHRISTMAS STORY – SERMON

            Based on “The Clown Of God”

            An old story from the middle ages

told and illustrated by Tomie de Paola

            Story-teller: Roberto The “Fool”

THE HYMN

            “I AM SO GLAD EACH CHRISTMAS EVE,

            THE NIGHT OF JE-SUS’ BIRTH!

            THEN LIKE THE SUN THE STAR SHONE FORTH,

            AND AN-GELS SANG ON EARTH.

            THE LITTLE CHILD IN BETH-LE-HEM,

            HE WAS A KING IN-DEED!

            FOR HE CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN A-BOVE

            TO HELP A WORLD IN NEED.

            GIO-VANNI LEARNED A LESS-ON LARGE

            THAT FRAN-CIS TOO HAD FOUND:

            IN LOV-ING OTHERS BY SHAR-ING GIFTS

            GOD’S LOVE FOR ALL DOES RESOUND!

            HE DWELLS A-GAIN IN HEAV-EN’S REALM,

            THE SON OF GOD TO-DAY;

            AND STILL HE LOVES HIS LIT-TLE ONES

            AND HEARS THEM WHEN THEY PRAY.

            I AM SO GLAD ON CHRISTMAS EVE!

            CHRIST’S PRAISES THEN I SING;

            HE OPENS THEN FOR EVERY CHILD

            THE PALACE OF THE KING!

(All Children return to their families’ pew as Keith plays through the hymn once more without singing.)

THE OFFERTORY – “Christmas Lullaby”                      arr. C. Taylor

THE OFFERING

THE OFFERTORY HYMN “WHAT CHILD IS THIS?”

 (sung standing)

What Child Is This

 So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh;

come, peasant, king, to own him.

The King of kings salvation brings;

let loving hearts enthrone him.

Raise, raise the song on high,

the virgin sings her lullaby;

joy, joy, for Christ is born,

the babe, the son of Mary!

THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

THE LORD’S PRAYER

THE HYMN #65 “SILENT NIGHT”

            (The pastor and acolyte will get fire from the Christ candle and walk down the center aisle, passing it to those on the end of each pew.  The congregation then passes the fire down the pew from neighbor to neighbor.  Parents should decide if young children should have a candle or not.  Incline unlit candles to lit ones so as to avoid wax spills.)

Silent Night, Holy Night!

1 Silent night, holy night!

All is calm, all is bright

round yon virgin mother and child.

Holy Infant, so tender and mild,

sleep in heavenly peace,

sleep in heavenly peace.

2 Silent night, holy night!

Shepherds quake at the sight;

glories stream from heaven afar,

heav'nly hosts sing, alleluia!

Christ, the Savior, is born!

Christ, the Savior, is born!

3 Silent night, holy night!

Son of God, love's pure light

radiant beams from your holy face,

with the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at your birth,

Jesus, Lord, at your birth.

THE BENEDICTION

PASTOR:         MAY YOU BE FILLED WITH THE

WONDER OF MARY, THE OBEDIENCE

OF JOSEPH, THE JOY OF THE ANGELS,

THE EAGERNESS OF THE SHEPHERDS,

THE DETERMINATION OF THE WISE

MEN, AND THE PEACE AND LOVE OF

THE CHRIST CHILD.  ALMIGHTY GOD,

FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT

BLESS YOU NOW AND FOREVER.

PEOPLE:         AMEN.

(The lights are turned on full force.)

THE CLOSING HYMN #39 “JOY TO THE WORLD!”

1 Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive its King;

let ev'ry heart prepare him room

and heav'n and nature sing,

and heav'n and nature sing,

and heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing.

2 Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!

Let all their songs employ,

while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains

repeat the sounding joy,

repeat the sounding joy,

repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

3 No more let sin and sorrow grow

nor thorns infest the ground;

he comes to make his blessings flow

far as the curse is found,

far as the curse is found,

far as, far as the curse is found.

4 He rules the world with truth and grace

and makes the nations prove

the glories of his righteousness

and wonders of his love,

and wonders of his love,

and wonders, wonders of his love.

WORSHIP ATTENDANCES

            December 18    10:30 am           118

                                     6:00 pm            29

                                                            147

THIS WEEKEND IS YOUR LAST OPPORTUNITY...

...to help our church get into the “black” with regard to our financial obligations in 2005.  As we go to press, here is what we need to get caught up in the 3 offerings remaining:

            Current             $13,120.

            Benevolence         1,373.

            World Hunger          345.

            Building Fund    Goal already met (extended by $850.)

  Pastor has asked that all of St. John’s households who can afford to do so give the church an extra $100 to current and $20 more to benevolence.  Do not give to the building fund because we have already met our annual goal there.  Thanks for your help.

THANKS...

...to all those who bought poinsettias to decorate our church.  69 were ordered - a record!

...to all those who helped decorate the church on December 17 and earlier this week.  Thanks to Janelle, Butch and Joyce, Pat V., Pat K., Janie, Jamie, George and Vicki, and Shirl.  (Our workers gave 2 - 5 hours of their time!)

...to our 14 carolers who visited 20 houses on Monday night - and to our cookie/pie and hot chocolate servers, Pauline, Charlie, Jim and Jo.  (Thanks to the Donegal High Singers who lent such beautiful voices to our traveling choir!)  Where were all our younger kids?  You guys really missed some fun.  See you next year?

VERY SAD NEWS

   On Tuesday of this week, our Temporary Shelter burned down.  The family is fine (housed in another shelter in Mount Joy), but the house is a total loss.  There was insurance but we do not yet know to what extent.  Stay tuned - and help us provide “room in the inn” when the opportunity arises.

POINSETTIAS...

...may be picked up after the 10:30 PM service on Christmas Eve or after the 9:00 AM service on Christmas Day.  Please do not leave them at church beyond the 25th because they cannot be properly cared for.  Also - please take only the number of plants that you have donated.  Check the bulletin to remind yourself of the number.

LAST COMMUNION OF 2005...
