Festival of the Reformation of Christ’s Church        October 31, 2010

                                                                                                  10:30 A.M.

Today, St. John’s gathers to worship in what some have termed a “contemporary” style.  While the structure of the service is fairly traditional, albeit simpler, the music is largely from the modern era, and we are led by a “praise band” consisting of a pianist, flutist, another keyboard player, and lead singers, rather than an organist and choir (as happens on other Sundays here).

All you need to do to become involved in the service is to listen and to respond, watching for instructions and words which will be projected on to the front wall of the sanctuary.  You need not use a hymnal, and this bulletin does not contain service information. It only provides announcements concerning our life together outside of worship.

Thanks for joining us today, to praise our Lord!

HARVEST HOME DECORATORS…

…Thanks so much for your lovely decorations! Please remove them after today’s service so that we can prepare for All Saints’ Sunday. You really blessed our worship these past three weeks!

HOLIDAY HOUSE TOUR…

…Get tickets for the Holiday House Tour of Maytown on December 11th from Gordy Nell, and save $2.00. Tickets cost $10 now and $12 on the day of the tour. There are 11 houses featured plus the museum, the “Royal George Tavern” (Al and Mary Ann Getz’s house set up like a colonial era inn with costumed waiters and waitresses and wonderful food), three churches, and a shop with vendors. Join the fun!

SEWING/QUILTING BEE---NOVEMBER 5TH!!!

ALL are invited to help knit, crochet, sew, or knot quilts and other items in our parlor on Friday, November 5th at 7 PM. We need helpers---whom we shall train if need be---to increase our production of these gifts of love. See Diane Leonard if you have a question.

NEW WINDSOR/WESTMINISTER DAY TRIP…

…We shall again take the van to Maryland on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH, to deliver quilts and blankets to the LWR warehouse, visit the Brethren Gift Shop, enjoy lunch at Maggie’s (CREAM OF CRAB SOUP TO DIE FOR!) and possible antique a bit! We plan on leaving at 9 AM and returning by supper. Five of the 13 seats have been claimed so far, but we’d love to have more go along. If interested, talk to Pastor. (We go “dutch”, paying for our own meals and shopping, and splitting the cost of the gas.) THIS IS OPEN TO ANYONE IN THE CONGREGATION.

WE WELCOME INTO OUR CONGREGATIONAL FAMILY TODAY…

…four new members and two returning ones! Our new members are Jean Nace, a resident of Castleton, who comes to us from Wolf’s Evangelical Covenant Church of West York, Michael Thomas of near Colebrook, the husband of Becky and father of Sam and Gabrielle, who comes to us from the Missionary Baptist Church of Decatur, Illinois, Trudy Fackler of Maytown, who comes to us from the former Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church of Reading, and Ray Stefanik of Maytown, Trudy’s partner and the father of their recently baptized daughter, Albree, who comes to us via the Visitation Roman Catholic Church of Johnstown. Returning to our flock are Al and Mary Ann Getz, who have transferred their membership back to us from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Adamstown.

We thank God for sending us each of these new members of our family-in-Christ and pray God’s blessing upon them and us! Welcome to St. John’s!

PORK AND SAUERKRAUT TODAY! YUM!!! ...Please support our youth group and share in a pork and sauerkraut feast that honors our new members in the social hall today, immediately after the morning worship service. In addition to the entrée, a vast array of home-made desserts will be offered to you for the price of a donation…with profits going to the youth group’s programming. We thank chief chef, George McConnell, assistants Charlie Johns and JoNan Shirk, several parents, the youth themselves, and our Social Ministry Committee, for helping to put this annual feast together, in celebration of our German heritage. ALL NEW MEMBERS WILL BE SERVED A FREE MEAL AS GUESTS OF THE SOCIAL MINISTRY COMMITTEE AND CHURCH.

THE ALPHA AND OMEGA BIBLE STUDY GROUP…

…meets in the parlor tonight at 7 PM and next Sunday at 7 PM, to continue our study of Ruth…and then David. Join us!

+RUTH ENGLE BAKER+

…On Friday of this week, Pastor will officiate at a brief graveside service for Ruth Engle Baker, who died last year and was cremated, but who has not yet been buried. Ruth was part of the remarkable Engle family that gave so much of themselves to our congregation in the 20th century. (Her sisters were Mary Wetzel and Floss Barnhart, and her brother was “Buz” Engle.) Ruth was baptized and confirmed among us, but she spent most of her church life at Christ Lutheran Church in Elizabethtown with her husband, Roy Baker, and children, Scott and Carol. She lived to be 90 and we thank God for her and hers.

+ERNEST HEINS WALLANDER+

…Our dear Brother, Ernest Wallander, whose funeral took place at St. John’s last week, was laid to rest in a private rite at Union Cemetery yesterday afternoon. We remember him with love.

AMANDA MCCONNELL GHAFFARIAN…

…was ordained into the ministry of Word and Sacrament, at our altar, yesterday, by her new bishop, the Rt. Rev. Marcus Lohrmann, in a service attended by many of Amanda’s family, friends, and fellow St. Johners. She will soon begin her official status as pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Metamora, Ohio, and we offer up many prayers of thanksgiving and supplication on her behalf, to God. It was a grand day for her, her family, and St. John’s!

TODAY IS THE DEADLINE…

…for ordering white roses to adorn next Sunday’s Cross of White Roses. You are also invited to bring along a framed photo of a loved one whom you wish to remember on All Saints’ Sunday. Simply put the picture in one of the window wells, after they have had their Harvest Home decorations removed.

STEWARDSHIP…

…To be a good steward is to be conscious that all things we have on earth are generous gifts from God. Stewardship is to care, to have concern, and to give thanks by giving of what has been given to us.
