TODAY IS “BLANKET SUNDAY” AT ST. JOHN’S

We shall receive a special offering in cash or in-kind to clothe the poor.  The blankets will go to the LWR warehouse in Maryland, from there, they will go around the world.  Cash will go to the World Hunger Appeal of the ELCA.

JENS WEDS

Pastor received photos of Jens Janzen’s wedding this week on the Internet.  Jens was the German boy who lived with Pastor several years ago.  He and his wife are both in graduate law school in Brisbane, Australia.

DOWNER DAY!

Make sure you circle your calendar and plan on being at church with your family and friends on Sunday, October 9th four our Annual Heritage Festival “Downer Day”.  Wear colonial clothing to get in the spirit of things (men wear blousy white shirts and sweat pants tucked into knee socks; women wear long dresses with white aprons and wide-ribbed straw hats or “mob” caps.)

After the service, our Social Ministry Committee will host a German Banquet featuring pork and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, applesauce, rolls, cider,, and a vast array of cakes, pies, and pudding.  Please let us know how many to prepare for by signing up on the sheet in the tower narthex.

URGENT NEED!!!

We have a great Sunday school program now with a number of dedicated and skilled teachers and almost 20 enthusiastic students, but we desperately need 3 or more people to volunteer to fill 2 jobs.  (Our teaching staff has to fill in the gaps until someone steps forward, and this is not right.  Christian education is all of our business.)

We are in need or someone (or someones) to serve a light snack.  (You need not pay for it yourself, but you have to get it at the store and serve it to the kids.  Church will reimburse you.)

We are also in need of 2 “shepherds”.  Shepherds go with the children to their workshops and help them and the workshop teacher to have a better experience.  At present, we have only 2 shepherds because 2 did not return from last year, and that means the shepherds have to work every Sunday.  It would be so much nicer if they could work only twice a month.

Please see Pastor or Missy Chapman if you will help us with these important jobs.  Thanks for caring.

CROP WALK 2005

This year’s Crop Walk will take place on Sunday, October 16, from 1 til 4.  If you’d like to walk – get a sponsor form from Pastor.  If you like to sponsor a walker, Pat Vogel and Pastor are happy to receive your support.  One quarter of funds raised go to our local food bank.
