WELCOME VISITORS!

We extend a hearty welcome to all of our visitors this morning and invite you to worship with us any time.  Please sign one of the guest books as you enter or leave the service, and we will have a small gift to give you.  The guest books are located in the vestibule and hallway, right outside the Sanctuary.  Ask an usher or any member if you need further directions or any help.  We’re glad you are with us!

FOOD BANK

…is in need of cans of pork and beans, saltines, and rice.  Please place any items in the “food bank cart”.  Thank you, Pat Vogel.

VBS VOLUNTEERS

…we still need helpers with our VBS this year.  If you will help, see Colleen Mackison, Laura Wolfe, or Pastor.  The school is scheduled for July 31 – August 4.  We are especially asking if anyone in the congregation would be willing to set up a model railroad platform in the Social Hall for VBS this year.  The theme of the school is trains.

THANKS TO MY ST. JOHN’S FAMILY

…for all the cards, flowers, visits and prayers during my recent operation.  How wonderful to know how many people care.  You are wonderful.  A special thanks to Pastor Bob for being there and his prayers.  Thank you so much.      Dick Shirk

THE AFTER CHURCH FOR LUNCH BUNCH

…invites all to join our merry band for a delightful afternoon of food and fellowship with your family in Christ – this Sunday or any Sunday.  We gather in the elevator lobby at 11:45 AM, decide where to go, and leave at noon aboard the 13 seat church van.  (Each person pays his or her own way and we split the cost of gas.)  Those who wish to join us, but who attend only the traditional service, may return to church to board the van OR if you live in Maytown, Pastor will be happy to pick you up at your house…it’s no trouble – we’d sooner have you with us!  Just tell Pastor if you want picked up, as you leave church.

A NEW MEMBERS/INQUIRERS CLASS

…will hold its first session this evening in the parlor.  The class is a requirement for those who wish to unite with St. John’s, but who come to us from non-Lutheran backgrounds.  It also serves as a refresher course to church basics and is open to those who just want to know what the Lutheran Church is “about”.  Please talk to Pastor as soon as possible, if you might be interested in attending the five or six session class.  When we meet for subsequent sessions will be determined at this evening’s meeting, after comparing participants’ calendars.

DON’T FORGET

…to pick up your July-August Newsletter.  It awaits you in your elevator lobby mailbox.  Help us by delivering an absent neighbor’s copy.  Thank you.

A NEW YOUTH CATECHETICAL CLASS

..will begin meeting in September.  Those whom our records show are eligible for the class are: Alex Smith, Willy Weller, Spencer Frank, Saige Demmy, Morgan Mackison, Kaycee Shirk, Gabrielle Thomas, and Scotty Wood.  If anyone else is in grade 6 or above, this September, you, too, are welcome to join the class.  Just say something to Pastor.  (Also – if any 6th graders would rather wait two years to start catechetics, please tell Pastor.)

Originally, catechetical instruction begins in 7th grade, but the Christian Education Committee decided to invite 6th graders this year, so that the class would have more than three students and so that the church might recognize and reflect the “middle school” class grouping and the earlier maturity of many of today’s children and youth.

…to Keith Smith, for donating a small train set for our use in VBS.

…to Charlie and Pauline Johns for setting up a wonderful 8’ x 12” table on which to erect our train platform.

WOULD THE TWO WOMEN WHO ASKED PASTOR

…to pick-up “Lutheran Chick” mugs for them (like the mug we gave to JoNan) please see him…he forgets who your are!  The mugs cost $8.00 each and they are wonderfully large.  If no one claims them by August 1st, they will be offered to the congregation.

THERE IS ONE SEAT LEFT

…on the church van, for the August 13th trip to Northeast, MD and Woody’s famous crab cakes!  If you want the seat, sign-up today.  So far, 24 of us are going, with 12 driving cars and 12 riding on the van.  Each rider pays for his or her own meal and shares in the cost of the gas.  The sign-up sheet hangs in the Narthex.

URGENT APPEAL FOR HELPERS

…for many years, Vernetta Wallander has been sewing quilt tops.  These were then given to people like Leonard Marx to fashion into quits by tying knots with yarn.  Now that Leonard has moved out of the area, we need folks to step up and take his place.  The job is easy, and it can be done while watching TV.  Vernetta will be happy to show you how – she just needs you to volunteer.  It would be sad if we could no longer make quilts to clothe the world’s poor – and it need not be.  Please talk to Vernetta or Pastor today and say you’ll help.  God Bless you for caring.

TODAY IS THE DEADLINE

…for signing up for the Fellowship Committee-sponsored tour of Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) country on August 5th.  The cost of the trip is $40 per person, and for that you get a guided tour, luxurious bus, and meal!  There's room for about 30 more people.  After today, an effort will be made to interested people outside the congregation in going along.  A sign-up hangs in the Narthex.  Talk to Bill Earhart or Connie Longenecker or Jan Shelly if you have a questions.
