PASTOR: Come, let us sing to the Lord;
PEOPLE: Let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation.
PASTOR: Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving
PEOPLE: And raise a loud shout to him with psalms.
PASTOR: For the Lord is a great God,
PEOPLE: And a great king above all gods.
PASTOR: In his hand are the caverns of the earth
PEOPLE: and the heights of the hills are his also.
PASTOR: The sea is his, for he made it,
PEOPLE: And his hands have molded the dry land.
PASTOR: Come, let us bow down and bend the knee,
PEOPLE: And kneel before the Lord our maker.
PASTOR: For he is our God,
PEOPLE: And we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
PASTOR: Glory be the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

And
PASTOR: God our father,
Beautiful in majesty,
Majestic in holiness,
You have shown us the
Splendor of creation in
The work of your servants,
John Mason Neale and
Catherine Winkworth, teach
Us to drive form the world
The ugliness of chaos and
Disorder that our eyes may
Not be blind to your glory,
And that at length everyone
May know, and sing of, the
Inexhaustible richness of
Your new creation in Jesus
Christ our Lord.
ALL: Amen. All sit, following the Prayer.

THE CHURCH HONORS THIS DAY
…two nineteenth century hymn writers who taught the English-speaking part of Christendom how to sing God’s praises using words that had been sung at other times and in other tongues.
John Mason Neale (1818-1866) was a Priest in the Church of England who served the poor and translated Greek and Latin hymns for the early church into modern English. Twenty-one of his hymns are in our LBW and two are in the Blue hymnal. Among them are such favorites as “O Come, O Come Emanuel”, Good Christian Men Rejoice”, All Glory, Laud, and Honor”, “Come You Faithful, Raise the Strain”, “That Easter Day With Joy Was Bright”, and “Christ is Made the Sure Foundation”.
Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) was a worker for the rights of women and a great admirer of Luther and the deaconess movement in Germany (as was her fellow Englishwomen, Florence Nightingale). She contributed no less than 30 hymn translations, from German to English, in our LBW – among them, favorites such as “Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying”, “Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Thy Word”, “Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty”, Jesus Christ, My Sure Defense”, “If You But Trust in God To Guide You”, “Jesus, Priceless Treasure”, “Now Thank We All Our God”, and “Praise To the Lord, and Almighty”.
Imagine if the church had never been blessed by the work of these two people! How poorer our worship life would be. We thank God for them, and sing their songs with joy! Happy Commemoration Day, John and Catherine.

VERY LAST APPEAL!
The time has arrived to decide if St. John’s can again offer a Vacation Bible School to our children and those in the wider community. We must know by noon today if at least eight more volunteers will step forward and agree to help with the school. If people don’t volunteer, the school will have to be cancelled. That would be a shame because VBS is the only chance that many of our neighbors ever get to learn about Jesus and his Gospel, and it would be the first time in about 50 or more years that St. John’s hasn’t had the ability to host a school.
Here are the jobs that need volunteers:
1. Craft Leader – picks age-appropriate, lesson coordinated, nice crafts from provided resources, make prototypes for display, teach crafts to adult and teen helpers, buys supplies - using church money.
2. Five Guides – leads groups of children from one workshop to another and watches over them. Helps to care, discipline, and co-teach children.
3. One or two more Registrars – registers arriving children from 6:00 to 6:40 PM Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
4. Artists/Decorators – helps create artistic environment for learning.
Talk to Pastor if you will help, or sign-up on the narthex sheet. Thanks for caring about our church and our children.

THE FAMILY OF NORMAN LEAS
…would like to extend a sincere thank you to the congregation for all their prayers, cards and prepared food that was sent to the house. Your kindness and concern has been greatly appreciated by the entire family and the good people of St. John’s have once again shown what wonderful and caring people they are. As Pastor stated at Norm’s funeral how much he loved to cook, we know he is up there making “chicken corn soup” and looking down wanting to say “it is the best I ever made”. The Norman Leas Family
