THE CONFIRMATION HYMN “Come, Holy Ghost, Our
Souls Inspire”
…This is one of the oldest hymns in our hymnbook. Sung originally in Latin, it is 1200 years old and has long been associated with Confirmation. (See Insert on pages 5 and 6)
(Each confirmand faces the congregation and tells who their mentor was, what they did to satisfy the requirements for confirmation, and why they wish to be confirmed.)
THE LITURGY P. 199 #12 (Green Hymnal)
P = Pastor R = Catechumen A = Lay Catechist C – All
(After prayer #15 is prayed, the Pastor, Vice President, and lay catechist go to the altar and assume positions behind and to either side of the kneeler.
The Catechumen’s name is called and they, accompanied by their mentor and parents, come forward. The catechumen kneels, and all place their hand atop the catechumen’s head, after the Pastor has first placed both his hands there.
(After the laying on of hands, Pastor places a Luther Rose necklace around the neck of each confirmand as his personal gift to them and a mark of their membership in the Lutheran Church.)

THE DISTRIBUTION
(The confirmands will commune first, with their parents and mentors, by kneeling and drinking from the chalice of our ancestors…the 1771 pewter. Then, the congregation will come forward and commune in a standing, continuous line. The choir and the “Luther Window” side of the church will come forward via the center aisle, receive the bread from the Pastor, proceed along the communion rail to the confirmand, to receive the cup near the side aisle, and either enter the loft or return to their pew via the side aisle. At the same time, those seated on the “Christ Window” side of the church will come forward via the center aisle, receive the bread from the Deacon, proceed to the confirmand for the cup, and return to their pew via the side aisle. The area under the balcony and those in the balcony should commune last and walk behind both lines so that they are even. (All who are baptized and commune in their home church are welcome at our altar. The un-baptized, very young children, and those who do not wish to commune may come forward for a blessing or stay seated. Indicate your desire by bowing your head before the Pastor or deacon.)
THE HYMS SUNG DURING COMMUNION:
#698 “We Were Baptized in Christ Jesus”
#746 “Day by Day”
#770 “I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry”

WELCOME VISITORS!
We extend a hearty welcome to all of our visitors this morning and invite you to worship with us any time. Please sign one of the guest books as you enter or leave the service, and we will have a small gift to give you. The guest books are located in the vestibule and hallway, right outside the Sanctuary. Ask an usher or any member if you need further directions or any help. We’re glad you are with us!
STARTING NEXT WEEK…
…we will staff a hospitality table in the parlor for persons desiring a cool drink, something to munch on, and conversation. The table will be in place for people leaving the early service (at about 10:30 a.m.) and those arriving for the later service. We hope you enjoy this. (Note: see Pastor, Pastor Peirson, Betty Henny, Jan Shelly, or Paul or Judy Purnell if you would like to volunteer to preside over the table. The church will provide all supplies, but we need people to set the stuff up and dismantle it.)
THANK YOU..
…to all those who helped with trimming, weeding and mulching of the church and parsonage.
THANKS, SENIOR CHOIR!
We thank our Senior Choir for their commitment to our worship life. Enjoy a well deserved break from weekly practice sessions and Sunday Anthems – and see you again in the loft in September! The pre-season picnic will again be at the Smith’s house on August 30th, at 6:30 p.m. See Keith if you have any questions.
ANNUAL JUNE CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
Announcement is hereby made of the next Congregational Meeting, which will be held between the Sunday morning worship services from about 10:15 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. on June 18, 2006. We must approve the audit and elect four deacons. Those nominated by Council are: Ryan Boccagno, Ruth Sweitzer, Pat Vogel, and Paul Woodward.
MEMORIAL DAY 2006 WRAP-UP
It was a sweltering hot May 29th, but Memorial Day turned out to be another happy day for our church.
Our hard-working Social Ministry Committee (aided, of course, by Norm and George) made about 100 quarts of chicken corn soup (ed. the best of all Lancaster County!!) and several dozen sandwiches, with most of the ingredients and all of the labor donated, and they realized a profit of $428.26. Thrivent will match all or most all of that sum, creating a fund of over $800 with which to do the committee’s good works. Thanks to our cooks, servers, donors and customers!
Charlie Johns and Vicki McConnell meanwhile were busy designing and executing another great float for the parade – aided by Pauline and Steve Johns, Paul Purnell, Dick and Louise Baker and others. The float which was pulled by Jack Frank’s old green Olds (and driven by Steve), featured 10 wooden crosses on which were written the names of the 10 Maytowners who lost their lives in military service to the U.S. during World War II. The crosses were set atop new green carpet, donated by the Johnses, and decorated by small flags and flowers. The front of the float displayed a large basket of red, white, and blue petunias and flags of the five services, while the rear showed a large American flag and the float’s theme sign. The back of the float displayed the new sign that we bought to advertise our summer worship schedule.
Riders on the float included Paul Rehkugler, who wore Pastor’s old USAF Staff Sergeant dress blues, Garreth Broucht, who wore his grandfather’s USMC Gunnery Sergeant dress uniform, and Glenn Bachert, who was regaled in his USAF SSGT. fatigues. The group “guarded” a flag-draped coffin, which was loaned to us by Jon Sheetz, thanks to his friend JoNan.
Ten of our younger children rode the float, too; they waved American flags and threw candy to the crowd, as “God Bless America” sounded from a C.D. player. Vicki and Charlie also walked alongside of the float just to keep things safe. Our efforts were rewarded with first prize, and the $100 will help fund CIA (Christ in Action) Junior Youth Group Ministry. Thanks to all who helped!
And to top off the afternoon, Pat and Gene Kirchner were given an award for their continued community service attending to the beautification of the square in Maytown.
WELCOME BACK, DIANE!
This week’s bulletin was prepared by our new parish secretary, Diane Leonard, who is also the Council’s secretary and our corporate secretary! Diane served in the position from 1978 through 1980 – so she comes with lots of experience. A member of St. John’s since 1977, she was raised at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lansdale. She is married to Jim (whose real first name is “Robert”!) and she is the mother of Gretchen and Heather, both of whom have children of their own…Drew, Maya and Maddy. Diane and Jim live in a lovely house in “Chickentown”, just outside of Maytown on the Stackstown/Bainbridge Road, and they are both interested in antiques and historic restoration. At church, Diane helps with Sunday School, is a member of the Social Ministry Committee, sits on Council and is one of our artists. (When not painting for the church, she enjoys doing “Fraktur” work, and is currently featured in the exhibit at the town museum.) We welcome Diane to our staff and pray God’s blessing upon her. Her home phone is 426-3072.
THANK YOU ST. JOHN’S…
…for the beautiful flowers and the “Lutheran Chick” coffee cup. It will be well used. A special thanks to P.B. for his very kind words and oh, of course the Skittles. Beware – you never know where they will turn up…JoNan
2006 SYNOD ASSEMBLY
Pastor, Vicki McConnell, and Paul Purnell will represent St. John’s at this year’s Synod Assembly, which will be held at Gettysburg College on Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10. Unlike previous years, the budget will not be approved at this conclave, but rather at a gathering in the Fall. Also this year, among those to be ordained into the Ministry of Word and Sacrament will be former Donegal High teacher, Mary Margaret Perraro Ruth, who is a member of St. Matthews, in Lancaster and who has worshipped with us on several occasions. (The delegation will be out of town all day and only return at night, on Friday, to sleep.)
NEW SUMMER HOURS…
…start on June 11. The Traditional Service will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude around 10:30 a.m. The Praise-band-led Service will start at 10:45 a.m. and end before noon. We hope you enjoy the change. Tell your friends and neighbors!
