OPENING HYMN -“You Are Worthy of My Praise”
|
READER 1: Lord of love, we give You thanks and praise this morning for the mothers who have unselfishly nurtured us through the years. C: WE THANK YOU LORD L1: for the mothers who kissed our hurts and dried our tears. C: WE THANK YOU LORD L2: for the mothers who rejoiced in our victories and shared the sorrow of our defeats. C: WE THANK YOU LORD L3: for the mothers who spent sleepless nights tending to our coughs and fevers. C: WE THANK YOU LORD L1: for the mothers whose special touch created a safe, comfortable sanctuary we call home. C: WE THANK YOU LORD L2: for the mothers who held our hands through the transitions of life. C: WE THANK YOU LORD L3: for the mothers who loved us even when we were bad, and so showed us the meaning of faithfulness. C: WE THANK YOU LORD L1: for the mothers who drew from an endless supply of optimism as they encouraged us to discover our strengths and test our wings. C: WE THANK YOU LORD L2: for the mothers who, in the evening, knelt by our beds and showed us how to pray and how to trust in Jesus. L1: Today we honor those mothers whose unconditional love has made us strong, L 2: and we honor those mothers whose commitment to their children is unwavering, L3: and we honor those mothers who raise their children in fear and respect of You. L1: Help all the mothers present today be bearers of Your redeeming love to their families. L2: Help us as parents and as a church to raise the little girls among us into strong women of God . . . L3: that in them the world may see the tender and compassionate love . . . C: WITH WHICH YOU HAVE LOVED US FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME. WE PRAY THIS PRAYER IN THE NAME OF CHRIST. AMEN. |

OPERATION FIRST RESPONSE (OFR)
Social Ministry is currently soliciting your contribution to fill OFR backpacks with a new set of clothing, travel size hygiene products handmade blanket and international phone card, to insure our wounded service personnel have the necessary items to sustain them until they return home. Place your items…listed in the May/June Newsletter, into the basket in the stairwell. Cash contributions in support of the project are also welcomed and should be given to Gladys Ney or Louise Baker. Please place your receipts for items purchased in the basket also, as we hope to receive matching funds from Thrivent. Please help us support our troops.
HOSPITALIZED/CONVALESCING
Prayers, cards, and perhaps visits are solicited on behalf of our recently hospitalized members…you might wish to call first or talk to Pastor.
- Ginny Zimmerman had outpatient knee surgery and is at home.
- Phyllis Hossler had leg surgery to repair a many-fractured femur last Sunday and, at the printing of this bulletin, was still an inpatient at Lancaster General, anticipating transfer to a rehab hospital.
- Susie (Young) Daily had back surgery, and she is at home, trying to cope with lots of pain and immobility – as well as baby care.
BALANCE ON BILTMORE TRIP DUE TODAY!
If you are one of the 14 people who signed up to go on the trip to Asheville in June, but who have not yet paid for the trip in full, please do so today. You paid $75 per person as a downpayment so we now need the remainding $424 (or $848 per couple). Make checks payable to St. John’s and place in the offering plate, inside an envelope marked “asheville Trip”. Questions? Talk to Jan, Paul, Judy, Connie, or Bill.
WE THANK OUR YOUTH
…and their adult leaders, Sue Frank and Charlie Johns, for leading today’s worship service.
TODAY! SEMINARIAN SUPPORT OFFERING
We are very grateful to God for having raised up among us after so many years, another youth in our body who is responding to the call of ordained ministry in the Lutheran church. We also recognize that college and seminary are expensive, and that carrying a large debt into one’s life as a pastor makes a tough job even tougher. With our current financial situation as pressing as it is, we probably can’t do a lot to help Amanda, but we pray that we will do at least something to show her we care and are proud of her. You can use the special envelopes that came with your offering box in December on any Sunday, but today we invite you to give something – even if it’s only a dollar, when the baskets come around. Thank you!
NURSERY COVERAGE
We thank Judy Purnell and Chris Harnish for volunteering to cover our nursery during services from now on. In this way, it is hoped that young families with young children will share in our congregational life more readilly - knowing that, if the little ones get “antsy”, there is always a refuge place to take them for the hour.
COUNNCIL DECIDED
…at its May meeting that the money given to the Sound System, which exceeded our expenses for the system, should be placed in the very needy Current Fund, with the understand that, if some minor improvements to the system are needed, they would be paid for by this money, as well.
THE FLOWERS GIVEN TO THE MOTHERS PRESENT
…are given, with love and thanksgiving, by the Social Ministry Committee.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Pastor is looking for people to help prepare and serve strawberries and ice cream after the Memorial Day Concert on May 28th, and to help usher at the concert itself. If you will help, please say something today. Profits from the concert will be augmented by Thrivent and will benefit the appeal to help our wounded troops.
CIA – Children’s Youth Group
…watch your bulletin for upcoming meetings and events.
