the palm sunday liturgy

At the sound of the chimes, the congregation rises and faces the Pastor, Lector, and Crucifer, who stands at the annex door, in the rear of the sanctuary.

pastor:                               Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

people:                               Hosanna to the son of David.

pastor:                               The Lord be with you.

  people:                               and also with you.

pastor:                               Let us pray.  Mercifully assist us, O’ Lord, God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts whereby you have given us life everlasting; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

  people:                               amen.

the processional gospel – lUKE 19:28-40

At the conclusion of the Reading, all raise their palm branches in the air and keep them lifted up until the hymn.

pastor:                               The Lord be with you.

  people:                               and also with you.

pastor:                               Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

people:                               it is right to give him thanks and praise.

pastor:                               We praise and thank you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

On this day, he entered the Holy City of Jerusalem in triumph, and was acclaimed Son of David and King of Kings by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in His path.

We ask that you bless these branches, and those who bare them, and grant that we may ever hail Him as our Lord and King, and follow Him with perfect confidence; through you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

  people:                               amen.

pastor:                               Let us go forth in peace.

people:                               in the name of the lord.

The candles will be extinguished during the singing, and a black veil will be placed over the cross in anticipation of Good Friday.

THANKS

…to the wonderful people who hosted and attended this year’s Lenten suppers.  The food was great, the discussion very good, and the crowds slightly better than in 2006…the meals drew 82, 48, 54, 43 and 42.

WE WISH TO THANK

…Margaret Landis for her beautiful solo last Sunday and for her and Rose Barr’s duet this morning.  Special thanks, too, to Glenn Bachert and JoNan Shirk for their duet this morning, and to Amy Chapman for her piano solo.  We are so blessed to have such wonderful and talented musicians.  Thank you all.

special services and events this week

All St. Johners are encouraged to attend each of the special services this week, so as to share in the Full experience of the Easter season.  Bring your children!

©   On Wednesday at 6:00 pm – we gather in the social hall for a Seder Meal and Communion that teaches us about the Sacraments’ Jewish roots. The meal uses symbolic foods that teach about the Passover – plus chicken rice soup, a “lamb” cake – and Holy Communion.

©   On Maundy Thursday – we offer two communions.  At 6:15 AM, there will be a “Quiet Hour” communion for those who wish to commune before work or at the start of the day.  The service lasts a half-hour and is done without music or a sermon.  At 7:00 PM, we join the folks at Zion Lutheran Church, in Marietta, for a full communion service with optional foot washing.  Pastor Hoffman will lead the Liturgy and Pastor Lescallette will preach.  Last year, Zion sent a big group of people to our church…let’s do the same for them, this year.

©   On Good Friday, at 7:30 PM – we will share in the dramatic Service of the Shadows.  This is traditionally our most popular mid-week service.

©   On Holy Saturday, at 2:00 PM – we will have a parish egg hunt for ALL children in elementary school and younger – members and non-members alike.  Children will first hunt for plastic eggs filled with candy, in the churchyard, and then scramble for peanuts and candy.  Next, they will go to the social hall to view a video, “The Three Trees”, and do a craft.  Finally, a snack will be enjoyed.

©   On Easter Sunday, at 11:00 AM – we shall celebrate Christ’s Resurrection with a service filled with special music, flowers, and Holy Communion.

thanks

…to our actors, singers, and cooks, who made today so memorable.

…to our brass polishers, Janelle Hollinger, Pat Kirchner, Pat Vogel, Keith Smith, Joyce Boyer and Pastor.

…to all who cooked and served at our Lenten Meals, as well as those who supported the meals with their attendance.

a big thank you

…to all that helped with the breakfast last Saturday, to those who baked for the sale and to those who supported the breakfast.  And especially to the Nell’s for all their hard work.  Both groups netted a profit of $419.60 which will go to the Maytown Historical Society and to the Sound System for our sanctuary.

THANK YOU

…to all the volunteers involved in the 2007 Easter Egg Candy Project for the Women of the ELCA.  Thanks to the 15 volunteers who gave of their time on Mondays and Fridays and to our super sales people.  To Esther Brown, Sue and Gordy Nell, Barb Heinaman, Vicki McConnell, Janet Mohr, Gladys Ney, Anna Walter, Chris Harnish, Kellye Sweitzer, Norm and Alice Leas, Tana Yung, and Gail Barclay – we say a special thank you.  You spent over 150 hours to make about 320 dozen eggs.  We are applying to Thrivent for a grant to the congregation for this project.         Ginny and Ruth

P.S.  There might be a few dozen eggs in the kitchen refrigerator if you did not order enough for all the bunnies in the house!

ATTENTION SYG

…remember to sign up for our trip to Susquehanna University for Lutheran Youth Day on Saturday, April 14th.  We will leave the church around 7 AM and return around 8 PM.  Cost is just $10 for the day, which includes lunch and a T-shirt plus a great experience.

We will meet next Saturday at 10 AM to hide the Easter eggs.  Plan on staying for lunch!  We should be done by noon.  If you have any questions, please call me…475-9014.

VERY NICE GIFT RECEIVED

John Tome, the grandson of John Andrew and Jenny Tome, St. Johners who gave us our Baptismal Font in 1915, and the son of Rev. John Supplee Tome, a Lutheran Minister who gave us the silver Baptismal Bowl, in the 1960’s, gave us $1,500 to help fund our new Sound System, in loving memory of his grandparents, parents, and recently deceased wife – she will be buried in Maytown Union Cemetery at the end of the month.

Thanks to this gift, the gifts of several other members, the breakfast/bake sale, the Tupperware sale and the General Memorial Fund, we are only approximately $500 - $1,000 short of paying for the new Sound System, and reimbursing the Building Fund for money borrowed from that fund.  On April 22nd, we will hold a special offering to try and erase this deficit and fully fund the project.  Thanks for your support!
