This Service Employs the GREEN Hymnal.

The organ Prelude –“O Worship the King” Chime Choir - W. Croft

The OPENING Hymn – #479 “My Faith Looks Up to Thee”    Sung standing.

the confession of sins/absolution – p. 56

     In place of the confession in the hymnal, under #2, after the Pastor begins with the words “Most merciful God”, ALL confess…

     We confess that each day, in so many ways, we are blind to your presence in our midst – in the faces and the lives of those around us.  Too often, we are so fixed upon winning, achieving, and having – that we miss the chance to look into the lives of our family, our friends, and the stranger.  Help us, God of life.  Give us the courage of many of Bethany to befriend one in need, to do the right thing even in the face of criticism, to spend everything on the priceless ointment of loving you and your world.  In the face of death, and in promise of love beyond death, we pray in Christ’s name.  Amen.

The Hymn of the Day  – “More Love to Thee”

The sermon

THE HYMN OF response – “Holy, Woman, Graceful Giver

                             Sung to the tune of The Stabat Mater.

1.   Ho-ly wom-an, grace-ful giv-er,

             Proph-et, ser-vant, and be-liev-er,

             Woman with the oint-ment jar,

             Rose up near the time ap-point-ed,

             Broke the seal, Christ’s head a-noint-ed

             For the com-ing fa-tal hour.

2.   Like the ves-sel, we are bro-ken;

             Like the oint-ment, we are to-ken

             Of God’s lov-ing un-to death;

             Like the wom-an we are serv-ing;

             Like the scold-ers, ill de-serv-ing

             Such a rich, for-giv-ing faith.

3.   In these jars is hid-den trea-sure,

    Cost-ly fra-grance, Christ-ly plea-sure,

    Like the Christ, first from the dead,

    Bro-ken for cre-a-tion’s whole-ness,

    Poured out for its com-ing full-ness,

    Proph-et, serv-ant, hope, and head.

4. Ho-ly wom-an, cost-ly trea-sure,

    With the jar of al-a-bas-ter,

    Shows the hid-den gift we are;

    There-fore let us as Christ’s ser-vants

    Hold our sis-ter in re-mem-brance,

    Wom-an with the oint-ment jar.

the musicale returns!

Keith has announced his willingness to again serve as an accompanist at our Memorial Day Musicale.  At the same time, plans are afoot to have special offerings designated for the support of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.  If you’d like to be part of this year’s musical extravaganza, featuring the music of Broadway, tell Pastor or Keith as soon as possible.  We have only three months to prepare.  Needed are singers (soloists, duets, chorus singers), instrumentalists, and dancers.  Let’s put on a show! Sunday, April 15th, at 3:00 PM we shall gather at Margie Landis’ house to pick music.

SOCIAL MINISTRY ADOPTS NEW PROJECT

The Social Ministry Committee will lead an effort to supply the American Troops serving in the Middle East with personal gifts that remind them of home and to let them know we care and thank them for their self sacrifice.  This is not a political statement, but rather a humanitarian and Christian outreach.  In the days ahead, you will be supplied with a list of snack foods, personal care items, and entertainment gifts that you may wish to donate.  The cash offering, received at this year’s Patriotic Musicale, on Memorial Day, will also go to the “Give 2 Our Troops” program. After all gifts are received, by June 1st, they will be taken to Warminister, PA for shipment to the men and women in uniform.  We hope you find this project worthy of your support.

NEW MEMBER/INQUIRER CLASS

…has begun meeting at 7:00 PM on Sunday evenings.  The class discusses Lutheran Christianity and is a requirement for membership in this congregation, if one does not come from a Lutheran background.  Fee free to drop by and sit in on any sessions.  Pastor, Janet and Angelica Mohr, and Scott Mackison would love to have you join us!
