IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING SUNDAY MORNING AT

ST. JOHNS

On Monday night, Council met for their monthly meeting, and discussed what to do about our Sunday morning schedule.  As a result of that discussion, and feedback from several congregational members, it was decided that, effective April 1, 2007 – Palm Sunday, we shall return to one service time, 11:00 AM, and the format used for worship shall be Traditional on the first, second and fourth Sundays of each month and Contemporary on the third and fifth Sunday of each month.  Where, however, the third or fifth Sunday is a major festival service such as Easter, Pentecost, or a historical anniversary, the Traditional format will be used.  It was also decided that children’s Sunday school would continue to be held from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM, but that Catechetical class and Adult Sunday school will meet from 9:45 AM until 10:45 AM.  The rational for the above is that the leaders of the Children’s Sunday School believe that attendance at Sunday School has improved due, in part, to the later hour, and it is not good to make a time change in the middle of a term.  On the other hand, the Catechists and Adult Sunday School leaders have found that 45 minutes is not enough time to get their lesson plans finished.  Because worship leaders need a minimum of 15 minutes to prepare for the worship service, Christian education classes must end by 10:45 AM.

In the name of the Christ who has called us together as His church, let us all resolve to give this new schedule a fair try.  It is impossible to satisfy everyone’s time and stylistic preferences, but we pray that all of us will recognize that there is something that is more important than getting our own way…and that something is worshiping God and learning about Him among the family that He has given us here at St. John’s.

Council has agreed to revisit this matter at it’s June meeting, at which time, our experience will be evaluated.  Thank you for your patience and your support as the leaders of your church seek to serve the Lord and His people in the best way possible, given our unity and our diversity.

the musical returns!

Keith has announced his willingness to again serve as an accompanist at our Memorial Day Musicale.  At the same time, plans are afoot to have special offerings designated for the support of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.  If you’d like to be part of this year’s musical extravaganza, featuring the music of Broadway, tell Pastor or Keith as soon as possible.  We have only three months to prepare.  Needed are singers (soloists, duets, chorus singers), instrumentalists, and dancers.  Let’s put on a show!

THE FOUR ACTS OF PRAYER

Beginning March 18th, you are invited to join the Adult Sunday school class for the start of a new short video and discussion program about prayer.  In “The Four Acts of Prayer” Walt Wangerin, Jr. uses stories to explore the elements of the complete circle of prayer.  Please contact Sheri Hafer, 426-2226, for more information.

THANKS, ED AND RYAN!!

We thank Ed Billman and Ryan Boccagno for responding to Pastor’s urgent appeal for someone to step forward and say that they would be responsible for securing ushers for the months of March and July.  Now, all we need is someone to say “Here I Am, Lord” for April, May June, and October.  Please, volunteer.  It is very difficult to have nicely organized worship services unless we can count on people volunteering to be ushers.  It is an easy job, but it is an important one.  Sign up today.  If you have a question, talk to Charlie Johns.  God bless you.

THERE IS AN IMMEDIATE NEED FOR ONE MORE MALE ACTOR

…for our Palm Sunday play.  See Pastor if you will be that one.

LENTEN SUPPER #3

Homemade chili and an assortment of wonderful breads and desserts, served by the Senior Choir, will be the fare at this Wednesday’s Lenten supper, at 6:00 PM.  Join us round the table…and bring your family and friends!

CHOCOLATE EASTER EGG

…project is at the halfway point.  Our last day of production is scheduled for March 26th.  To guarantee your order will be filled, please place it in the order basket by March 18th.  Orders will be filled in the sequence they are received and may be picked up anytime after 12 noon on Mondays.  Order forms are located in the elevator lobby and on the tower windowsill.  With this project, St. John’s chapter of the Women of the ELCA is applying for up to $1300 in Congregational Matching Funds through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

AN URGENT APPEAL TO THE SAINTS AT ST. JOHNS, FROM PASTOR AND COUNCIL

As you probably know, our former Treasurer, Jim Landis, decided to take a leave of absence from his many years of service to the church in July of 2006.  Jim Leonard and Joyce Boyer stepped into the position, dividing responsibilities between themselves, with the understanding that their service would last a year.  We have, however, recently learned that Jim Landis will not return as our Treasurer…so we must find someone, or someones, new to manage our financial affairs.  We cannot afford to pay someone to do the job, so we must do it ourselves.  But who will step forward and help us?

Thus far, our President and Pastor have asked a number of persons to serve, and none has agreed to do so.  That has created a major problem for our church.  We cannot continue to exist as an institution in the world without someone recording and banking contributions and paying bills.  It looks like someone would be willing to do the work of entering weekly contributions in the computer and generating the end-of-year financial statements, but we need someone else to pay bills and generate the monthly Council report and the Annual Financial Report

It is likely that we shall employ an easier “QuickBooks” software package that anyone with basic computer skills could master, and both Joyce and Jim have offered to help train their successor(s)...so all we really need is one of us to step forward and, with a spirit of love and commitment for this body, to say “I’ll do it!”

We cannot impress upon you enough, the urgency and importance of securing a Treasurer.  Let this appeal find a place in your heart and move to your lips.  God bless you for caring.

ASHEVILLE TRIP DEADLINE – TODAY!!!

If our church is to sponsor a trip to Asheville, North Carolina this summer, then we need at least 35 people to sign up and pay the initial deposit of $75 by tomorrow at Noon.  The total trip costs $510 per person, assuming double occupancy, with the balance due May 13th.  As we go to press, only 21 persons have committed themselves to the trip.  If 14 more don’t sing up today, an effort will be made to have the tour company find strangers to fill up the remaining seats, but the trip might have to be cancelled.  It’s up to you St. John’s.  Sign up now, or forever hold your peace!  Questions may be addressed by consulting with the informational sheet in the tower Narthex or by talking with Connie Longenecker, Bill Earhart, Paul or Judy Purnell, Jan Shelly or Pastor.  We hope you decide to go.
