A BIG “THANK YOU”

…to our Lay Speakers, who shared such important thoughts with us today, and who helped lay the foundation for our Stewardship Ministry this year.

MALE AND FEMALE DELEGATES TO SYNOD ASSEMBLY

…are needed.  If you are a confirmed, communing, voting member of St. John’s - you are qualified to serve as our representative - you need only volunteer!  This year, the assembly will be held at Messiah College in Grantham, York County (Harrisburg Metro area) on Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14.  We shall elect a new Synod Treasurer and several other persons, meet the new ELCA Secretary, David Swartling, Ordain some seminarians, worship, do Bible study, and learn about the wider church.  Talk to Pastor if you would be interested in joining him at the event, as soon as possible.

SOAP!

The Social Ministry Committee is again asking the congregation to support a collection of bath size bars of soap which will be given to Lutheran World Relief.  Our goal this year is 1,000 bars.  Please remember to buy soap each time you go to the grocery store and bring it to church with you, setting it in the laundry basket in the tower window sill.  So far, 500 bars of soap have been given. Let’s all contribute to a cleaner, healthier human family!

…to everyone for making the soups and casseroles - we appreciated them ever so much.  Thank you to Pastor for his visits and prayers. Thank You, Esther Shirk

2008’s LAST LENTEN SUPPER

…will occur on Wednesday, of this week, at 6:00 PM.  Come and enjoy Sheri’s colorful three bean chili, Pastor’s tuna or chicken salad sandwiches, and Ann and Diane’s desserts - plus another great video from Rob Bell.

NEXT SUNDAY

…is Palm/Passion Sunday, the door to Holy Week, and we shall mark the day with three wonderful events.

At 8:30 am, the Social Ministry Committee and several men of the church will serve a magnificent breakfast consisting of pancakes, eggs, sausage links, hot cross buns, orange juice and coffee.

At 9:15 am, a video on Mary Magdalene a so-called “Bad Girl” of the Bible, presented in a very entertaining and informative way, will be shown to adults and older youth, while children will have Sunday School.

Finally, at 10:30 am, the service will begin, with the Blessing Of Palms…different ones than usual, the singing of hymns, a duet by Glenn and Jo, and the “world premiere” of a new play, written by Pastor, and entitled “At The Inn Of The Rising Son.”  The play will feature Sheri and Cliff Hafer and Bob Frank and Jamey Shirk. Please attend all these events and invite your family and friends.

AN URGENT NEED

…exists for people to serve as Head Ushers.  No one has signed up for this important ministry for March, April, May, June, or July.  Please sign up TODAY.  Head ushers enlist 3 or 4 others to usher at each of the Sundays in the month.  Charlie Johns is the resource person/supervisor of the program.  Questions may be addressed to him.

YOUTH GROUP RUMMAGE SALE:

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Please mark your calendars…

The annual youth group rummage sale has been scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend. We will be open for business in our social hall on Saturday, May 24th from 8am to 1pm and Monday, May 26th from 8am-12noon.

The rummage sale has been a major fund raiser for our youth program for years. Now more than ever, a successful rummage sale depends upon the participation of our congregation. If you are available, we could use your help in setting up, selling, and/or packing up the weekend of the sale. We need your new, gently used or collectible items as merchandise (we will pick up and store items beginning now). And of course, we need you as customers. Please contact Vicki or Sheri for further information or item pick-up. Thank you.

ANYONE INTERESTED IN JOINING ST. JOHN’S AS A MEMBER

…should let Pastor know of your desire.  A class on Lutheran Christianity, which is a requirement for those who do not come from Lutheran backgrounds, will be offered in April and May, if the need exists.  Persons transferring to St. John’s from other Lutheran congregations and those confirmed and raised in such churches need not attend the class, but are welcome to do so.

YOUR LAST OPPORTUNITY!

…to order chocolate eggs made by our church is today.  The eggs will be made tomorrow. The cost is $3.90 per ½ dozen or 65 cents each.  We make peanut butter, coconut cream, and mint eggs in light and dark chocolate.  Profits benefit many church and community projects.  Order forms can be found in the tower window sill basket.

BIBLE STUDY

…will meet at 7:30 pm.  Everyone in the congregation is invited to attend a Bible Study on Acts.  We get together each Tuesday at 7:30 PM, in the parlor, and are led by JoNan Shirk and Carol Bachert.  Please read chapters 22 and 23 for March 11th.

250th Birthday

ANYONE INTERESTED

…in helping Maytown celebrate our 250th Birthday in 2010 is urged to speak with Pastor as soon as possible.  There is a special need for people to join a finance/development committee so that the event can be funded, but other committees needing staff are program, historical, decorations, souvenirs, arrangements, hospitality/invitations, food, and publicity.  On May 1st, a decision will be made to go ahead with the celebration or not, based upon volunteer support.  Fifty people have signed up so far, but only one has agreed to serve on the finance committee, and that must increase if we are to have the event.

KNITTING AND CROCHETING UPDATE

So far we have many baby caps and booties made, and a blanket.  Several more baby blankets are near completion as well as a pair of “baby sport socks” and prayer shawls and lap robes are also being worked on. We have many patterns to choose from.  These are projects you can work on while watching TV or riding in the car or waiting for an appointment.  Sounds like fun?  Come join us every Friday evening in the parlor beginning at 7:00.  If you don’t know how to knit or crochet, or maybe just a little “rusty”, we can teach you or refresh your memory.  Please note, we will not be getting together Friday, March 21st - Good Friday.

IT’S TIME TO ORDER EASTER FLOWERS!

The order blank is enclosed in today’s bulletin for you to place your order of Easter Sunday’s flowers to again fill the sanctuary of Easter’s beauty.  Please fill out your form and give it and your payment to Diane no later than Palm Sunday, March 16th.

On Monday evening, March 10th at 7 pm we will meet in the Social Hall.  Every female member of the congregation is welcome to participate in this fellowship for learning, service and support.  Come join us for an evening of devotions, planning, and fellowship.  Topics for the meeting are reports on the Candy Egg production and hosting the Confirmands’ reception on Pentecost.  Esther Brown will lead the devotions and Ruth Sweitzer will serve as hostess for the evening.
