+ H. Elaine Douglas Felty Fuhrman +
The sympathy of the congregation is extended to the family of Elaine Fuhrman, who died on Monday of this past week, at the Masonic Homes in Elizabethtown. A daughter of Marietta’s English Presbyterian Church, Elaine married St. Johner, Clarence Felty, and worshiped with us, as a member, from 1940 to 1969. She and Clarence had four daughters, Linda (Geary) who died in 2004, Sandy (Wittick), Carol and Cheryl – all of whom were St. Johners…with Sandy remaining so. When Clarence died, Elaine married Wilbur Fuhrman, and transferred to Wilbur’s church, Zion Lutheran, in Marietta, but the couple returned to St. John’s in 1979 and they remained a part of this family-in-Christ for the rest of their lives. We commend our sister to Christ’s eternal care and pray Easter’s peace upon Sandy and Bill. The funeral was conducted in our church on Saturday and interment was in Maytown Union Cemetery.

LENTEN SUPPER #1
Come to the first Lenten Supper this Wednesday night at 6:00 PM for a delicious meal of ham and bean soup and hot dogs, prepared by the Vogels and the youth, and an interesting video, with discussion and devotions – and bring your family and friends! We conclude by 7:30 PM, so the senior choir can hold its regular practice.
THANKS, RUTH!
We thank Ruth Sweitzer for donating $5,000 to our Sound Improvement Project in loving memory of Don, who had a special interest in all things technical and electrical! The generous gift means that we shall only have to raise about $3,000 to pay the balance due on the new system.
CONTRIBUTIONS FOR THE SOUND SYSTEM
…may be made, using an ordinary white envelope. Simply place your check inside, made out to the church. Write you name, envelope number, the amount, date and “Sound Improvement Project” on the envelope Then place it in the offering plate. Thank you!
THANKS MARK AND CHRIS!
We thank Mark Harnish and Chris Green for helping to alleviate a water/ice problem that we are experiencing with the patio deck and east wall of the social hall. They broke ice and cleared a drain through melting.
FELLOWSHIP MOVIE/SNACK/GAME NIGHT REPORT
On Shrove Tuesday, 36 of us crammed the theater to watch a “Little Rascals” movie or sat at tables in the social hall to play cards or board games and feast on Fasnachts, popcorn, or make-you-own-sundaes. Thanks to our generous hosts, the Fellowship Committee, for presenting the evening! Jan and Cindy passed out genuine Mardi Gras beads and donated Fasnachts and other foods, Connie served up ice cream with a vast array of toppings, Paul and Judy contributed other foods, and Pastor got the movies. Thanks also to projectionists Missy, Ann, and Denny! We’ll have to do it all again sometime!!
ASH WEDNESDAY ATTENDANCE – 49
HOPE TOTE COLLECTION
On Monday of last week, items from the Hope Tote collection were delivered to the Women’s Shelter of the Water Street Mission, located in Wrightsville. Toiletries, wash cloths, socks and personal care items added up to 223 items that will be distributed to the need women and children being cared for there. Your generous response to this appeal is indeed a special Valentine gift to them. Thanks to all for caring and giving.
INVITATION FOR MEMBERSHIP
Anyone who would like to join with our family-in-Christ, as a member, is encouraged to talk to Pastor. A new class will begin meeting sometime in March and he needs to know of your intention and when your schedule permits attendance at the 90-minute class sessions, of which there are six.
KEITH UP-DATE
As you can tell, Keith made it through his heart catharization procedure on Tuesday and even played at the Ash Wednesday service – what a guy! He had a “stent” put in to relieve a blockage, so hopefully he’s good for another 1,000,000 miles and lots of anthems, preludes, hymns, and solos!!
NEWSLETTER PICK-UP TODAY!
Don’t forget to pick up your copy of the parish newsletter in your “elevator lobby mailbox”. It is chock full of information about past and future events, plus another challenging, fun, and educational crossword puzzle that is worthy of Bruce Sipling and Ernest Wallander!
ACTORS NEEDED
On Palm Sunday, we shall again offer the congregation an adult chancel drama. This year’s play is entitled “The Decision” and it requires a cast of seven men and women…we need three more – mainly men! If you will help us by acting in the play – talk to Pastor as soon as possible. Parts are not difficult, but actors must be willing to memorize their lines. Thanks for helping us have a more meaningful Lent!
LENTEN DEVOTIONAL AIDS
As you entered church today, you should have received a journal booklet and a small bronze nail. It is hoped that you use these two gifts from the congregation to have a more meaningful Lent. Please do not simply lay them aside – but thoughtfully employ them each day.
SYG
…will be meeting tonight starting at 5:00 and end by 7:00. Meatball sandwiches will be served. Plan on having a 'fun-n-games' evening. Hope to see everyone there. Call me if you have any question...Susan

FELLOWSHIP TRIP TO ASHEVILLE – ONLY 16 HAVE SIGNED UP SO FAR
June 21-24 our church is sponsoring a wonderful trip to Asheville, NC to see the Vanderbilt estate, ride a train, tour a folk park, and do lots of other fun things together. A flyer with specifics can be found in the Narthex or you can talk to Bill Earhart, Connie Longenecker, Jan Shelly, or Paul and Judy Purnell. The cost of the four-day trip by bus is $510 per person (double occupancy). Payment of a $75 deposit is due when you sign-up, but definitely before March 12th. Because we need to have at least 35 people for the trip to go forward, we are immediately contacting other area churches and groups – so St. Johners should not wait in signing up as soon as possible. Let’s have a good turn out for this fun trip!

“FEED BACK” SOLICITED
Council has asked the Worship and Music Committee to consider, again, how best to structure our Sunday morning worship times. The reasons for this include: 1) the recognition that the 9 AM time slot has not proven effective in causing attendance at the Contemporary Service to grow – in fact it had declined to roughly 20 per Sabbath, and 2) problems with retaining band personnel due to discouragement with the poor response and/or fatigue…many band members and our support staff attend both services, and rehearse at both band practice and choir practice every week. Pastor and Glenn must always rush from one event to another on Sunday morning.
There is a desire to be able to continue offering a “contemporary” worship option to our people and the Maytown community and to also create larger, more unified worshipping congregations each Sunday morning, while also recognizing that most of our present congregation seem to prefer “traditional” worship. There is also some nostalgia for the fellowship that once obtained when we had the evening service.
Accordingly, Worship and Music is proposing the following, as a Sunday morning schedule, starting sometime after Easter:
1. Return to a single service on Sunday morning, which should begin at 10:30 am – with Sunday School starting at 9:00 am or slightly later – 9:15 or 9:30.
2. Use a traditional worship format on the first, second, fourth, and fifth Sundays of each month, with the third Sunday employing the Praise Band and the contemporary format. On the rare third Sunday when a major festival or anniversary/historical event falls, the traditional format would be employed.
3. Offer a contemporary service on the first Sunday evening of each month, followed by fellowship time/snacks.
Further details would have to be discussed, but this, in general, is what is being considered. If you have any comments, opinions, advice, criticism, applause for this idea, please talk to one of the following: Pastor, Keith, JoNan, Joyce, Janelle, Charlie, or Pat. We pray that a plan can be arrived at that will be to God’s glory and His people’s blessing.
