THE FAMILY OF KASS WOLFE

…offers their thanks for the prayers, cards, visits and especially Pastor during her illness.  Thanks also for the sincere expressions of sympathy during this past week.  We will miss her.   Peggy and Pat

THANKS, ST. JOHN’S!

I would like to express my thanks to so many leaders in our congregation, who prepared for Kass Wolfe’s funeral in my absence.  When I got home, I had relatively little to do other than conduct the service and help clean up afterwards.  Thanks to Pat Vogel, for organizing things; to Diane, for a perfect bulletin; to Dick Baker, for setting up tables and chairs; to Alice, Norm, Ruth, Rose, Betty, Pat and whoever else helped with the kitchen…including our many cake bakers! and to Charlie, Jim, Mark, George and Dick for helping as pallbearers and service helpers.  You all functioned like the proverbial “well-oiled machine” and both served Kass’ family well and made your Pastor’s work much easier.  Thank you!

ACTORS NEEDED

On Palm Sunday, we shall again offer the congregation an adult chancel drama.  This year’s play is entitled “The Decision” and it requires a cast of seven men and women.  If you will help us by acting in the play – talk to Pastor as soon as possible.  Parts are not difficult, but actors must be willing to memorize their lines.  Thanks for helping us have a more meaningful Lent!

THE MAYTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

…postponed their monthly meeting due to this week’s snow.  They will meet in the parlor at 7:00 PM tomorrow night (Monday).  Join us…if you are not on the Social Ministry Committee!!

OUR AFTER CHURCH FOR LUNCH BUNCH

…is in danger of dying if more of us don’t go along after church for a delightful meal and fellowship.  See you in the elevator lobby at 12:30 today!!

FOOD BANK COLLECTION

Our local bank is in need of fruit juice and saltines.  Please bring a can or box or a cash donation along to church on Sunday, February 25th.  Thank you, Pat Vogel.

MEMORIAL GIFTS

…$780.00 has been given to the General Memorial Fund, thus far, from the friends of Kass Wolfe and her family.  We thank them for honoring our sister’s memory in this way.

LENTEN DEVOTIONAL AIDS

As you entered church today, you should have received a journal booklet and a small bronze nail.  It is hoped that you use these two gifts from the congregation to have a more meaningful Lent.  Please do not simply lay them aside – but thoughtfully employ them each day.

SYG

…we will not meet this evening as originally planned.  Meeting has been switched to next Sunday, Feb. 25.  We will start at 5:00 and end by 7:00.  Meatball sandwiches will be served.  Plan on having a 'fun-n-games' evening.  Hope to see everyone there.  Call me if you have any question...Susan

ATTENTION ALL COMMITTEES AND GROUPS

Your photo will be taken at February meetings of your body – so please make sure that you are present.  The photos will appear in the new pictoral directories, which we hope to have in your hands by Easter.

SYMPATHY IS EXTENDED

…to Norm, Alice and Rose Leas at the news of the death Thursday of Norm and John’s brother Oscar.  Oscar had been a member of this church prior to his marriage, but most of his life in Christ had been spent as a member of the United Methodists.  He lived on Donegal Springs Road near his two sons and their families.  May Easter peace enfold one and all.

STILL NEEDED

…head ushers and bulletin sponsors.  Please sign up on the Narthex sheet.  Thank you!

THERE IS AN IMMEDIATE NEED – LAST CALL

…for someone to serve as St. John’s representative on the Home of Hope (temporary shelter) Board.  The representative agrees to attend a monthly meeting at the Mount Joy’s “Simplee Seafood” restaurant on the second Wednesday of each month, from Noon until about 2:00 PM.  They then convey needs to the congregation and the local task force – which manages the Kline Trailer Park home, and carry our concerns back to the Board.  Please speak to Pastor or Vicki McConnell TODAY if you have a question about the job or wish to volunteer.

ANY COLLEGE STUDENT OR SOMEONE WHO IS CURRENTLY A COLLEGE GRADUATE

…and who is considering a call to the ordained ministry in the Lutheran Church or some other church vocation is invited to attend a free “Seminary Weekend” at Gettysburg Seminary from April 13 – 15, 2007.  Housing, meals, transportation, and all costs are paid for by the Seminary.  This is an excellent opportunity for those who are trying to decide what calling God has in mind for them, to experience what it’s like to be a Seminarian.  Both those who are embarking on their first career and those who might be interested in changing careers, are welcome to attend.  See Pastor if interested, and he will give you the necessary contact information and paperwork.

COMING SOON – SHROVE TUESDAY!

Circle your calendars and come to this year’s Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras Party at church!  The Fellowship Committee has planned a battery of comic movies, shown in the Saint’s Cinema – complete with gourmet popcorn, soda, and candy.  There will also be a make-your-own-sundae bar, Jan’s famous beads, and lots of cards and board games available.  Further nourishment will be had by devouring fasnachts!  Join us for the “family” time – and bring friends and neighbors!  All ages welcome!!

ASH WEDNESDAY

Come to church at 7:30 PM on Wednesday for our annual service of Holy Communion and the Imposition of Ashes.  There is no finer way to start Lent.

PHOTO DIRECTORY

77 of our 100 member households got their photo taken for our new pictoral directory.  If you were among those who did not get photographed, we really ask you to do so.  Simply talk to Jan Shelly at 653-5383 and she will arrange for you to be photographed by Olan Mills at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, in Bainbridge on February 23 and 24.  You are under no obligation to buy the photos, but you get proofs and one 8x10 freeplus you help our church by a) helping new members learn to know us and b) helping our church to get more free copies of the directory for distribution.  Every household that is photographed gets a free directory.  Also, if you have had any problem with your Olan Mills order, call them, or call Jan, and the problem will be corrected.  Thanks for your cooperation in this important ministry!

FELLOWSHIP TRIP TO ASHEVILLE – ONLY 10 HAVE SIGNED UP SO FAR

June 21-24 our church is sponsoring a wonderful trip to Asheville, NC to see the Vanderbilt estate, ride a train, tour a folk park, and do lots of other fun things together.  A flyer with specifics can be found in the Narthex or  you can talk to Bill Earhart, Connie Longenecker, Jan Shelly, or Paul and Judy Purnell.  The cost of the four-day trip by bus is $510 per person (double occupancy).  Payment of a $75 deposit is due when you sign-up, but definitely before March 12th. Because we need to have at least 35 people for the trip to go forward, we are immediately contacting other area churches and groups – so St. Johners should not wait in signing up as soon as possible.  Let’s have a good turn out for this fun trip!

“FEED BACK” SOLICITED

Council has asked the Worship and Music Committee to consider, again, how best to structure our Sunday morning worship times.  The reasons for this include: 1) the recognition that the 9 AM time slot has not proven effective in causing attendance at the Contemporary Service to grow – in fact it had declined to roughly 20 per Sabbath, and 2) problems with retaining band personnel due to discouragement with the poor response and/or fatigue…many band members and our support staff attend both services, and rehearse at both band practice and choir practice every week.  Pastor and Glenn must always rush from one event to another on Sunday morning.

There is a desire to be able to continue offering a “contemporary” worship option to our people and the Maytown community and to also create larger, more unified worshipping congregations each Sunday morning, while also recognizing that most of our present congregation seem to prefer “traditional” worship.  There is also some nostalgia for the fellowship that once obtained when we had the evening service.

Accordingly, Worship and Music is proposing the following, as a Sunday morning schedule, starting sometime after Easter:

1.    Return to a single service on Sunday morning, which should begin at 10:30 am – with Sunday School starting at 9:00 am or slightly later – 9:15 or 9:30.

2.    Use a traditional worship format on the first, second, fourth, and fifth Sundays of each month, with the third Sunday employing the Praise Band and the contemporary format.  On the rare third Sunday when a major festival or anniversary/historical event falls, the traditional format would be employed.

3.    Offer a contemporary service on the first Sunday evening of each month, followed by fellowship time/snacks.

Further details would have to be discussed, but this, in general, is what is being considered.  If you have any comments, opinions, advice, criticism, applause for this idea, please talk to one of the following:  Pastor, Keith, JoNan, Joyce, Janelle, Charlie, or Pat.

We pray that a plan can be arrived at that will be to God’s glory and His people’s blessing.
