SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY

The youth of Saint John’s are asking that the congregation support Souper Bowl Sunday - TODAY. What they are asking is for one or more items of non perishable food to be donated to our local food bank. The Food Bank is requesting jelly, but will accept what ever you bring. Our goal is to collect 100 items by the first weekend in February. Simply put the items in the grocery cart inside the front door or in the box under the mailboxes at the elevator. Feel free to support the food bank year round by placing an item or two in the cart every month if you can.

THE FOOD BANK is also in need of empty egg cartons…just place them in the grocery cart, any time you think of it.  Thanks

The Social Ministry Committee will be hosting a program to all St. John’s members and friends.  Our mission is to come together to knit or crochet newborn and premature baby caps, mittens, blankets (for Lancaster General Women and Babies Hospital) – lap robes for oncology patients, and Prayer Shawls for anyone in need.  Our first goal is to teach anyone willing to participate how to knit or crochet.  This will take place on, Friday, February 8th, at 7:00 pm in the parlor.  Diane, and hopefully others, will teach the basics of beginning knitting...and we will probably need more than one or two times to come together for this.  Other experienced knitters may begin any of the project patterns we have.  We need to decide on an appropriate day and time for us to get together on a regular basis, whether it is weekly, semi-monthly, monthly, and morning, afternoon or evening.  This is a great opportunity for getting together while doing something worthwhile…and getting to know each other better.  For anyone ready to knit…patterns are available for you to get started.  Please talk to Diane or call her at home at 426-3072.

YOUTH GROUP RUMMAGE SALE:

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Please mark your calendars…

The annual youth group rummage sale has been scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend. We will be open for business in our social hall on Saturday, May 24th from 8am to 1pm and Monday, May 26th from 8am-12noon.

The rummage sale has been a major fund raiser for our youth program for years. Now more than ever, a successful rummage sale depends upon the participation of our congregation. If you are available, we could use your help in setting up, selling, and/or packing up the weekend of the sale. We need your new, gently used or collectible items as merchandise (we will pick up and store items beginning now). And of course, we need you as customers.

Please contact Vicki or Sheri for further information or item pick-up. Thank you.

CONGRATS TO GORDIE AND SUE

We rejoice with Gordie and Sue Nell and their family and friends at the attainment of the 50th anniversary of their marriage.  My God continue to bless them as they continue their life together!

BIBLE STUDY

…will not be held this Tuesday - because of Mardi Gras Fun Night, but will resume next Tuesday, February 12th at 7:30 pm.  Anyone in the congregation – is invited to attend a Bible Study on Acts.  We get together each Tuesday at 7:30 PM, in the parlor, and are led by JoNan Shirk and Carol Bachert.  Please read chapters 13-15 for the 12th.

ANYONE INTERESTED IN JOINING ST. JOHN’S AS A MEMBER

…should let Pastor know of your desire.  A class on Lutheran Christianity, which is a requirement for those who do not come from Lutheran backgrounds, will be offered in April and May, if the need exists.  Persons transferring to St. John’s from other Lutheran congregations and those confirmed and raised in such churches need not attend the class, but are welcome to do so.

SOUP AND SANDWICH SALE

The Maytown Historical Society will hold a Soup and Sandwich sale on Saturday, February 16th.  The profits from the sale will aid the restoration of the Hastings House, a 1760 era log house that is the site of the Maytown/East Donegal Museum.  The beef vegetable soup is $3.50 per quart.  The ham and cheese sandwiches are $2.00 each.  To order, sign up on the sheets posted in the narthex and elevator lobby or call 426-3262 or 426-2786.

FELLOWSHIP TRIP

If our church is again going to sponsor an over-night, multiple day bus trip to either Western Long Island - the Hamptons, or Cape Cod in the fall, we MUST have a larger indication of congregational support.  So far only about 15 people have indicated a willingness to go on a trip and we cannot begin to plan in earnest until about 20 or more of you express an interest.  Please take the time to check out the display in the tower window sill and fill out a form.  You must take action this Sunday or next.  Fellowship trips are always great fun, they are affordable vacations, and best of all, they help us to get to know one another better.  Tell our Fellowship Committee that you value their work by signing up today!  Thank you!

IT’S EASTER EGG TIME!

The Women of the church will have handmade Easter Egg candy available beginning February 11th.  Order blanks are at each entrance to the church.  Orders may be placed in the same basket.  The cost is $3.90 per ½ dozen.  Orders will be filled in the sequence they are received and may be picked up anytime after 12 noon on Mondays.  If you have time to help with the project any Monday morning, please consider aiding our small group to package the eggs and fill orders.  We are applying to Thrivent Financial for matching funds for our congregation.
