NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN
…of the Annual January Congregational Meeting, which will be held on Sunday, January 21st, at 10:00 AM – Snow date January 28th. Note that the meeting is scheduled for the hour between the two worship services. The agenda will include the reception of reports, approval of membership rolls and a budget, election of a Deacon to replace Al Getz, and consideration of a proposal for a new sanctuary sound system. Lenten suppers’ hosts needed
If St. John’s is again going to celebrate Lent by having soup and sandwich suppers, it is up to you to host a supper. Committees, groups, extended families, friends, and others are asked to commit themselves to cooking and serving and clean up after one of the five Wednesday night meals. Available dates are March 7th, March 14th, March 21st, and March 28th. You may pay for the food as the hosts, or seek reimbursement from the night’s free will offering. Meals start at 6:00 PM and conclude about 6:45 PM – with a video and devotional time afterwards. Cooks may choose a homemade soup and sandwich, with beverages and an optional dessert or do some other one-dish entrée like chili, stew, etc. Plan on serving about 60. If you will host a meal, please sign-up on the sheet hanging in the tower Narthex no later than January 28th. Thank You!
PASTOR OUT OF PARISH
Pastor will not be in Maytown from tomorrow afternoon through Tuesday evening. He must drive his Dad down to the National Institute of Health in Washington, DC to monitor the latter’s cancer. Please call Diane if you have an emergency that requires pastoral care.
HEAD USHERS
…are needed for 2007. Please sign up on the chart in the tower Narthex. Head ushers are responsible for getting people to serve a Sunday or two in “their” month, at the traditional service. You can be a man or woman, a teen or senior, experienced or a “rookie”. Charlie Johns will train you and answer all your questions. Just sign up! Thanks.
IMPORTANT REGARDING: HUNGER OFFERNG
At the time that offering envelope boxes were distributed, we did not have enough World Hunger envelopes to give all boxes 12 envelopes. The envelopes have now arrived. You can find them in your elevator lobby mailboxes and in the pews. Thank you!

CONGRATS, WILLY!!
Did you check out the front page of The Merchandiser this week? It was a St. John’s “sweep”! The lead article showed our own Willy Weller winning the Geography Bee at Donegal. Way to go, Willy!! There was also a nice article on our new theater with a photo of Diane and Chris and an article on the younger Jack Frank who will present another of his famous mountain slide shows.
ATTENTION EVERYONE…especially “spaghetti lovers”
The Youth Group will be serving a spaghetti dinner on Sunday, January 28th immediately following traditional church service. The money raised will fund the activities planned for the Youth Group this coming summer. Please support the youth by enjoying a delicious spaghetti dinner cooked by George McConnell with assistance from the Youth Group! We are asking for a $5 donation per person.
WONDERFUL NEWS
The congregation again rallied in your support of the budget in December, with $29,023 of income received…which is over twice what is realized in an ordinary month! We exceeded our goals for World Hunger, the Building Fund, and Synodical Benevolence, and only missed our goal for Current (the operating fund) by $858. That deficit is not a genuine one because we spent only $122,280, but had $132,850 in income – so we were in the “black” by $10,570! When total finances are considered, we had a total expenses of $157,084 verses $168,991 in income. Thanks to everyone who went an “extra mile” to make sure that our church continues to have the financial resources to engage in our ministry. With less than 100 families, we did very well in 2006.
CONGRATS TO GABRIELLE
…on being part of a prize-winning team in the “Sheep-to-Shawl” contest at this year’s Farm Show in Harrisburg. Gabrielle was the weaver in the five-member team that was coached by her mother, and aided by her brother. The team consisted of all teenagers, and they were the youngest to compete out of the eight teams, but they finished in fourth place! Way to go, Gabrielle! A good crowd of nine St. Johners was on hand to root her on!
MINI MINSTRY SOLVED?
The Maytown Historical Society recently hosted a program on clock making in Lancaster County, which prompted Pastor to again read a book on the same subject by Stacy Wood. As he read, he remembered that, in 1770, when our original communion ware was given to the church by various donors, a “Mr. Hoff of Lancaster, presented us a small bell for use on the offering bag (the “Klingelsack”). “Who was this Mr. Hoff?” Pastor always wondered.
The likely candidate was George Hoff, who was born in the Rhineland Palatinate…like most of the first St. Johners, and who came to Pennsylvania in 1765. Hoff bought a house on West King Street, near the market, and began selling tall case clocks, which he made until his death in 1816. Hoff was an active citizen and Assistant Burgess in Lancaster, he was in the Colonial Militia, and he was an active member of our “Mother Church”, Holy Trinity, where he no doubt met our founder, Ludwig Lindemuth. Being an active churchman and a clockmaker, he would have been delighted to give a bell to a new congregation – just as he was “new” to America.
Now – if Pastor can only find out who Frederick Schwarz was, who gave us our magnificent chalice!
LAST CALL! HELP! PLEASE!
Paul Purnell the projectionist at our Contemporary Service, is having an operation tomorrow which will require perhaps a month or two of convalesce. Someone is needed to “sub” for him in this vital job. Please talk to Pastor if you will be that person. We cannot have contemporary worship without a projectionist, so someone must step forward. The job is easy and could be done by anyone. Help!
SYNOD DELEGATE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
On June 7-9 (Thursday night through Saturday afternoon) our Synod will hold its annual assembly at Gettysburg College. One of the major items on the agenda is the election of a Bishop. The ELCA’s National Secretary, Rev. Lowell Almen, will be the guest representative. We need one male and one female voting (confirmed and communing) member of our church to attend. Teens to seniors can go. Please talk to Pastor as soon as possible.
HOPE TOTES
The Women of the Church have started a collection of personal care items for the Women’s shelter in Wrightsville. Our goal is to present them with these gifts on Valentines Day. A basket is on the tower window sill to receive any items you wish to contribute. Needed are: toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, disposable razors, shampoo, hair brush, combs, hand or body lotion, tissues, lip balm and socks. Thank you for your giving to this project.
NEW FLOWER AND BULLETIN SPONSORSHP CHARTS
…have been posted in the tower Narthex. Please sign-up to provide altar flowers or pay for bulletins on a special Sunday or two in 2007. Bulletin sponsorship costs $20 and altar flowers vary according to your wishes and the florist chosen. See Diane Leonard, our secretary, if you have a question. Thank you for helping to both beautify our church’s worship and save our operating budget an additional expense! There are still some Sundays for both January and February for the flower and bulletins still available…not to mention many available openings for the rest of the year.
The CIA will be going roller skating
…at the Castle in Lancaster on January 20th, 2007. Meet at the church parking lot by 9:15am. We will be leaving the church at 9:30am. Permission slips will be located in the mailbox section by the elevator or see Vicki or Charlie for one. There is no charge for admission for CIA members. The cost of skate rentals is $2.00 for Quads and $3.50 for roller blades. Questions? Call Charlie at 330-8895 or Vicki at 426-2773 (evenings). Friends are always welcome.
